“On the surface, ‘The Way She Was Watching Me’ is inspired by John Fowles’ ‘The Collector’ and the dual nature of its narration (themes of duality are present throughout Drain the Maker). The book first presents a story from the perspective of a butterfly collector who abducts an art student named Miranda, after which it becomes a first-person account via Miranda’s diary. Much of the lyrical content can be interpreted from both perspectives.

The track is not about presenting the inherent shock value of the story or romanticizing its events; however, it is a reflection on the culture of appreciation shown toward work by entitled and predatory men who hide behind power and faux-sensitivity. What if a song was released that revealed its creator’s intention at face value? Would an audience still appreciate it then? At what point does cognitive dissonance become too strong?”

Drain the Maker represents the first major release of Uuskhy’s. Over the past year, Uuskhy have released a couple of experimental EPs (on Bandcamp ) in preparation of this first major release. Uuskhy are secretive about their recording process, but I do know that it’s entirely DIY.
