Alongside a current crop of self-producing, outspoken, empowered, female acts blazing a trail such as MUNA, Tegan and Sara, and Shura, CATBEAR is a fierce and empowered voice with a lot to say.

Their new single, Unrequited Love, has skillfully captured that grimy infatuation that comes with unreciprocated feelings for someone. That fuzzy and blurred sense of confusion and frustration – why don’t they see me, why can’t it work? With voices weaving together; often indistinguishable, and rich textures and layers throughout the track, evoking that powerful feeling of twisted torment.

This, their second single, is fully home-recorded, self-produced, and jam-packed with the familiar CATBEAR synths and intricately layered vocals that resonated through their last track, Beast of The Night. Musical and lyrical echoes of Robyn’s ‘Dancing on my Own’ and MUNA’s ‘So Special’ sit alongside a strong 80’s pop influence nodding to the likes of Chaka Khan and Tina Turner.

Having survived the ups and downs of band life, relationships, and friendships, CATBEAR is shamelessly making music for their own kicks.

“We make music for the enjoyment of it. We are two good friends that love each other and we love making music together. There is no other agenda.

And with that attitude, we want to inspire young women and LGBTQ people like us to not only go form a band but to take control of every aspect of their music. You can be a guitarist, you can be a drummer. You can make beats, you can record and produce your own music. You can be anything.”

CATBEAR infuses the retro synths of the 80s with the riot grrrl attitude of the 90s. Born out of the London grrrl movement in the mid 2010s, CATBEAR gives us indie synth pop classics and androgynous anthems that leave you feeling full of big dick energy.

Self-produced and recorded in the depths of their home studio, CATBEAR has a candidly DIY and independent soul. Zoe Konez (lead guitar, vocals, production) and Sarah Smith (drums, vocals) have grown and developed CATBEAR from its teenage identity as Cat Bear Tree and evolved it to become the empowered voice for two friends to make self-assured, bold music through.

“They’re fantastic, aren’t they? How are they unsigned? That makes no sense at all. I like them very much.”

Simon Raymonde, Cocteau Twins/Bella Union Records/Amazing Radio

“It’s an incredible piece of contemporary pop”

About to Blow Magazine

“Outstanding… Zoe crafts melodic synth lines and an analogue-style pop flair.”
