Johnny Hunter are quickly growing in ferocity and potency with each piece of music they release.

Continuing in the blaze of their last single, the Australian four-piece are set to release Life, the second track on the new home label Cooking Vinyl Australia.

Across years spent writing and touring around the country, the band’s sonic identity has become unwavering in its impact. When a band like Johnny Hunter delivers new music, there is a reason heads turn with fiery and menacing punk energy driving each release. Working alongside audio engineer Adam Greenspan (IDLES, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), their music is a rendezvous between Joy Division, Sonic Youth and Bauhaus.

2020 further cemented the band’s rise with their beautifully melancholic debut EP Early Trauma, gaining critical praise and airplay around the country. Released during the pandemic, the band were unable to tour but still signed to Cooking Vinyl Australia before any representatives had been given the chance to see a show.

In their latest single Life, their new wave nuances announce themselves in splinters of reversed guitar, pummeling basslines, hollow drum hits and lead singer, Nick Hutt’s resounding vocal. The track comes as the glass half full brother to their earlier single The Floor. Where The Floor is a catharsis of being at your lowest, Life exudes a passion for the glory of existence. About the track they say:

“To find life is to find happiness, it is the ultimate end and purpose of our existence. Life is not found in the darkness of the night, nor is it found in selfish ideals. It lies in the balance of the new day and how we approach our imperfections to bring balance to ourselves. The answer to The Floor, an ultimatum proposed to the self, to change or die, to sink or swim.”

Johnny Hunter’s theatrical, post-punk ballads place them to be one of the most exciting rising bands of 2021.
