The Top 5 Christmas Music Videos Ever (Definitive Holiday Edition)
Christmas music videos don’t just add festive cheer – they shape generations. From 80s heartbreak in the snow to gritty, emotional winter streets, these are the five Christmas videos that have stood the test of time. Rewatch them, share them, and let the nostalgia take over.
1. Last Christmas – Wham!
Why it hits so hard: Shot in the snow-covered Swiss Alps, Last Christmas pairs festive scenery with emotional heartbreak. Ski lodges, close-ups, knitted jumpers and George Michael’s quiet sadness created one of the most recognisable Christmas visuals ever made.
Legacy: Remastered and re-released decades later, this video continues to rack up millions of annual views every December.
2. All I Want for Christmas Is You – Mariah Carey
Why it works: Styled like a vintage home movie, the original video captures pure festive joy – Mariah in the snow, dancing around a Christmas tree, living inside a December dream.
Cultural impact: It’s now a global Christmas anthem, and the video is just as essential as the song itself.
3. Fairytale of New York – The Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl
Why it stands out: Raw, messy and painfully honest, the video reflects the darker side of Christmas. Instead of glitter and smiles, we get reality – broken dreams, flawed love, and emotional chaos.
Why we keep returning: It feels real. And sometimes, Christmas really does feel like that.
4. Do They Know It’s Christmas? – Band Aid
Why it matters: This wasn’t just a video – it was history. A who’s who of the 1980s music world coming together for a global cause, captured in one studio, in one moment.
Why it still resonates: In a season dominated by consumerism, it reminds us what Christmas is really about: unity and compassion.
5. Step Into Christmas – Elton John
Why it’s joyful: Pure 70s glam, glitter and celebration – this video is festive without trying too hard. Just music, colour and energy.
Why it still works: Sometimes you don’t want to feel emotional – you just want something joyful on while you decorate the tree.
Final Thoughts
The best Christmas music videos don’t just accompany songs – they become part of our traditions. They follow us through childhood, heartbreak, celebrations, and lonely December nights. Whether it’s Mariah in the snow or Shane MacGowan on a gritty New York street, one thing is certain: we’ll press play again this year.
