When experiencing emotional neglect one can be overtaken by darkness. I was going through the above earlier in the pandemic when the need to connect was more palpable.

I don’t want to die / but I won’t live this way.

This double negative enforces that sense of entrapment – if you don’t want to die and you won’t live the way you’re living, then what do you do?

You must leave the situation, or continue to suffer the cycle. So many nights, caged in / Innocent, waiting.
