Miranda Joan’s Musical Odyssey: From Soulful Roots to ‘Overstimulated’
Miranda Joan, a multifaceted Canadian artist hailing from Montréal, has etched her musical identity as a singer, songwriter, and musician. Her upbringing on the north shore of Vancouver served as the fertile ground for her introspective songwriting, a process that transformed diaries brimming with emotions and experiences into the foundation of her musical narratives.
Influenced by a spectrum ranging from the classics—Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, and Carole King—to contemporary artists like Anderson Paak., Little Dragon, and Robyn, Miranda’s music weaves together the timeless and the cutting-edge, resulting in a distinctive blend of Soul-Pop.
Rooted in the fluidity of Vancouver’s Pacific Ocean backdrop and infused with the vibrant spirit of Montréal, Miranda maintains a deep connection to her Canadian roots. Despite her initial shyness, her musical journey began in high school drama and musical theatre, where she discovered her affinity for Soul, R&B, and Jazz sounds.
Miranda’s sound evolved further during her time in New York, where she pursued Jazz studies and absorbed the city’s gritty intensity. Establishing herself in the Brooklyn Soul/Jazz community, she co-founded Brooklyn’s Femme Jam, an all-female-led jam session fostering inclusivity in the music scene.
A mentor in arts for the past eight years with SAY: The Stuttering Association for the Young, Miranda has toured nationally, graced renowned New York venues, and lent her backing vocals to artists like The Killers, Shawn Mendes, Lorde, Kylie Minogue, and Andy Grammar. Her collaboration with Sly5thAve at the Montréal Jazz Festival, paying tribute to Dr. Dre with the Orchestre National de Jazz de Montréal, showcased her versatility.
In 2021, Miranda released her debut album, ‘Windborne,’ following her 2019 EP, “Still,” both garnering radio airplay in Vancouver and Los Angeles. Recent singles, “Overstimulated” and “I Love You, Dwayne,” have received acclaim from NPR, Consequence, EARMILK, Exclaim!, and airplay on CBC and MountainFM in Canada, as well as Jazz FM in the UK.
Collaborating with Ben Carr, also known as CARRTOONS, Miranda crafted her sophomore album, ‘Overstimulated,’ transforming what began as a single collaboration into a rich exploration of affirmation, self-love, and the complexities of dreams, love, and heartache. The LP seamlessly navigates between contemporary Jazz and Soul, blending instrumental and acoustic elements with electronic undertones. Featuring production from CARRTOONS and contributions from artists like Sly5thAve, Jake Sherman, Ben Williams, The Huntertones, and Kristine Kruta, Miranda Joan’s musical journey unfolds as a captivating and genre-defying odyssey.
