SANDS Blurs the Line Between Dream and Reality with ‘So Real’

London’s own psych-pop conjurer SANDS returns from the shimmering melancholy of his 2023 album The World’s So Cruel with a bold new descent into dream logic. His latest single, “So Real”, out October 29th on all major streaming platforms, opens the first chapter of an ambitious two-part release — a double vision that will continue with “Pirate” come late November.

“So Real” is SANDS at his most cinematic, a widescreen fever dream that swells with noir piano drama and lush, Bowie-in-Berlin grandeur. It’s the sound of city streets seen through a cracked window, where reflections shimmer and the line between the physical and the imagined slips away. The song drifts like a concrete bubble, fragile yet unbreakable — gliding between people and buildings, pulling you into a world where meaning feels slippery and beauty teeters on the edge of collapse.

With a palette of psychedelic haze, dark pop pulse, and surrealist storytelling, SANDS sketches a universe where absurdity and truth trade masks. “These tracks explore the tipping point — the moment when reality starts to distort and the absurd becomes seductive,” SANDS says. “It’s a bit of a shift from The World’s So Cruel — the mood’s more cinematic, even theatrical. Things are more unstable — like a cracked mirror.”

If “So Real” is the grand hallucination, “Pirate” promises to be its whispered confession — a lazy, intimate, and sultry inversion of the first act. But as always with SANDS, the question lingers: what’s genuine, and what’s performance?

A lifelong sound obsessive, Andrew Sands (aka SANDS) grew up devouring records, first as a drummer and guitarist before falling into the alchemy of recording and production. His influences — Neil Young, Bowie, The Smiths, David Lynch, Talk Talk, Echo & the Bunnymen — map the DNA of his sound: restless, romantic, and always a little haunted.

With “So Real,” SANDS doesn’t just blur the boundary between reality and reverie — he invites you to get lost in the blur itself.
