Copenhagen-based artist Sophie Lou steps into the spotlight with remarkable honesty on her debut single “How to Not Expect Too Much,” out now via Virgin Records. The track arrives ahead of her first EP, It’s Easy to Be Soft, out now, and it’s a breathtaking introduction — equal parts fragile, fearless, and deeply human.

The song captures the quiet collapse that follows loss and the tentative hope of learning to trust again. Written in the wake of her mother’s passing, How to Not Expect Too Much is Sophie Lou’s raw confrontation with grief, perfectionism, and the fear of falling short as a partner, a friend, and a person simply trying to hold it together.

“I had lost my mother — the most important person in my life — and I had done everything to escape that grief,” she shares. “When I finally found a home, I fell in love for the first time while still completely broken. The song was born from that collision.”

Rooted in a life steeped in music, Sophie Lou draws from an eclectic background that spans jazz, choral, and experimental pop. She spent 14 years performing with the Danish National Girls’ Choir (DR Pigekoret) and grew up surrounded by the improvisational freedom of jazz — influences that now merge in her ethereal yet emotionally charged sound.

Her music thrives in contrasts: angelic harmonies meeting distorted guitars, intimate whispers colliding with sweeping, cinematic arrangements. Each note feels like a step closer to healing.

How to Not Expect Too Much follows the breakout single I Will Love You Till I Die, which earned national airplay on P6 BEAT and sparked international attention for its striking vulnerability.

The upcoming EP It’s Easy to Be Soft continues that journey. “The EP is about choosing softness in a world that tells you to harden,” Sophie Lou explains. “I’ve learned to take my vulnerability seriously — and that has opened a more compassionate space, both for myself and for others.”

Behind the artist name stands Sofie Emilie Maintz Thorsen, who not only wrote and produced the EP herself but also collaborated with Nanna Schannong (Lowly) on mixing and Alma Hede (De Må Være Belgiere) on mastering.

It’s Easy to Be Soft is out now — a stunning debut from an artist who understands that sometimes strength is found in surrender.
