The Get Alongs Lean Into Summer Haze on “Sunday Afternoon”

Toronto has a way of producing songs that move at the same speed as a long, slow city evening, and The Get Alongs have just slotted another one in. “Sunday Afternoon,” out now, is the second advance single from their upcoming LP Second To None, due June 19 on Having Fun / We Are Busy Bodies. At a tidy two and a half minutes, it sounds less like a song you press play on than a place you find yourself sitting in.

Their first preview, “Come On,” ran hot and loud. “Sunday Afternoon” turns the dial the other way. Jangling guitars, a loose rolling rhythm and a winding guitar lead that ambles around for most of the track before opening into a proper shred — the shape of the song is unhurried, but the hooks land easy and the band sounds at home in the restraint. Touchpoints sit somewhere between The Stone Roses’ rhythmic shimmer and The Lemonheads’ melodic clarity, with the surf-edged indie rock of the band’s earlier work softened rather than abandoned.

The four-piece (Harrison Pickernell, Rory Pickernell, Eric Wood and Tristan Catenacci) have been at this since 2017, evolving from scrappy garage beginnings, through their debut Weather Permitting, into something more expansive. Recent miles include CBC airplay, dates at Reeperbahn, and supports with Limblifter, Wunderhorse and Cardinals. Second To None was tracked at Holy Mountain Sound in Montreal with producer Clayton Dupuis, in focused sessions that pulled the band outside their usual setup. “Sunday Afternoon” is the clearest indicator yet of where that pushed them: same chemistry, wider lens.
