Echoes Beneath the Surface: Cherim’s Ğymaq
Ored Recordings unveils Ğymaq, the striking new album from Cherim – a work that reimagines the label’s rich archive of Circassian recordings through an immersive ambient lens.
Drawing on fragments of traditional songs, shichepshin melodies, percussion, and field recordings released over the years, Cherim dismantles and reshapes familiar sounds into something altogether more spectral. Voices dissolve into vast reverberant spaces, rhythms drift in and out of focus, and archival echoes emerge like half-remembered dreams.

Rather than preserving the past in amber, Ğymaq allows it to breathe in a new form. Layers of ambient textures, blurred melodies, and submerged recordings create a deeply atmospheric listening experience that exists somewhere between memory, landscape, and imagination. It’s an album that honours Circassian heritage while pushing its sonic vocabulary into compelling new territory.
Its title, Ğymaq – meaning “Cry”– captures the emotional core of the record, exploring themes of home, language, family, loss, and the echoes they leave behind.
