Tuning Into the Unexpected with ‘Frequency’

After opening 2026 with two distinctive releases, The Songs of Butler & Cupples continue their creative evolution with ‘Frequency’, a vibrant, genre-defying single that places adventurous songwriting firmly at its core.

Conceived as a songwriter-led project free from the expectations of a conventional band, The Songs of Butler & Cupples has become a space where ideas take precedence over image and composition outweighs convention. Led by two seasoned industry songwriters, the project follows the song wherever it wants to go, embracing stylistic shifts rather than resisting them. With Frequency, that journey arrives in richly textured territory, weaving together jazz-infused R&B, alternative pop, and understated electronic flourishes.

Lyrically, the single explores the fragile chemistry of nightlife and human connection. Built around the notion of finding, or losing, the right frequency with another person, it captures the emotional highs, awkward misfires, and surreal moments that unfold beneath nightclub lights. There is an unsettling undercurrent running through the track, recalling the dreamlike tension of a David Lynch film, where beauty and unease coexist in equal measure.

Musically, Frequency thrives on contrast. Hook-laden melodies and expressive vocal performances drift effortlessly across production that feels at once organic and futuristic. Live-sounding instrumentation collides with contemporary pop sensibilities, giving the song a loose, almost improvised energy without sacrificing its immediacy. It’s a track that reveals new details with each listen while remaining instantly memorable.

With every release, The Songs of Butler & Cupples continue to demonstrate an impressive willingness to sidestep genre boundaries, moving seamlessly between electronic pop, rock, experimental textures, and now jazz-leaning soul. Rather than following trends, the duo remain committed to songs with emotional weight, inventive arrangements, and a clear artistic identity.

If their earlier releases hinted at the project’s ambitions, Frequency makes them impossible to ignore, a confident, immersive single that reinforces The Songs of Butler & Cupples as a songwriting project driven by curiosity, craft, and a refusal to stand still.
