Our-Fi find the space between beats on “Probably Pretty Improbable”
Phoenix isn’t the first city you’d think of for skittering, left-field electronica, but Our-Fi seem happy to prove the desert can do glitch as well as heat haze. The duo of Derek Peper and Alix Murdick have just released “Probably Pretty Improbable”, and true to its name, it’s a track that refuses to go where you expect.
About the single
This is music that breathes. It opens in sparse electronic territory, then slowly fills with intricate percussion, bent and warped synths, and a push and pull that feels closer to a band in a room than a loop on a grid.
Somewhere in there you’ll hear indietronica, glitch-pop and a bit of broken breakbeat, all folded together without any of it taking over.

If you’ve got a soft spot for Mount Kimbie, Jamie xx, Caribou, Four Tet or James Blake, you’ll feel right at home. It’s not a copy of any of them, more a shared fascination with where machines end and human hands begin. There’s no big drop or tidy club structure either. Instead, tension, repetition and little unexpected swerves do the heavy lifting, and the song is all the more hypnotic for it.
A band built on a long story
The backstory is lovely. Peper and Murdick met in high school, dated on and off through college and eventually got married. Our-Fi grew out of all those years together: the records swapped, the tastes that shifted, the jobs and responsibilities that come with growing up, and all the sounds they picked up along the way.
That history explains why the project never sits still. Their wider catalogue pulls in hip-hop rhythms, expressive guitar, live instrumentation, dub and rock alongside the electronics, and every release is treated as a fresh experiment rather than another step down a fixed path. The duo sum up their whole philosophy in three words: “Try. Live. Do.”
“Probably Pretty Improbable” is out now on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, TIDAL, Deezer, SoundCloud and the rest. Put on some good headphones and let it unfold.
