A rich and glittering alt-pop sound she has been cultivating over the years
Following on from the enormous response to her previously unveiled offerings ‘Hypocrite’ and ‘Seriously?’, which have since found support from the likes of The Line Of Best Fit, Earmilk, Clout and many more, Toronto-based artist Maya Malkin now continues the support for her eagerly-awaited debut album ‘Congratulations’ with the vibrant new single ‘Honey’.
Bringing back more of that rich and glittering alt-pop sound she has been cultivating over the years, ‘Honey’ makes for a brilliantly fun and uplifting listen. Produced by and partially recorded with Likeminds in LA (John Legend, Leona Lewis, Avril Lavigne) and mastered by Tess Greenham (assisted her father John Greenham in mastering Ashnikko, Billie Eilish, Finneas, Girl in Red), she is continuing to cement herself as one of the more joyous names emerging on the scene right now.
Speaking about ‘Honey’, she said, “Honey is the calm before the storm. Probably the most lighthearted on the album, and one of the only songs with a positive twist, Honey hints at the issues that the rest of the album tackles without yet understanding the darkness that lies ahead.”
Meet Maya Malkin, a Toronto-based artist, making pop with a purpose, who first entered the scene with her band Motel Raphael. With Motel, Maya has played the likes of Osheaga, and SXSW, opened a sold-out show for Tegan and Sara and performed on Parliament Hill for Canada’s official 150th birthday celebration. In 2020 when the world felt more apocalyptic than ever, Maya launched her solo project with her first single, ‘Hostage’. Aside from hearing Maya on Virgin Radio, CBC, KiSS, and the like, you may also find yourself listening to Maya during a commercial or two, where she dabbles in the realm of jingle writing and voice acting. She has found fans in the likes of The Line Of Best Fit, EarMilk, Clout, Canada’s Walk of Fame, and more.
Evident in her songwriting, Maya holds nothing back and is here to offer the sounds of victory and healing, having come out the other side of an abusive relationship. Her brutally honest lyrics dressed up in glossy pop production, her knack for writing a catchy melody, and her vision for this project make her a force to be reckoned with and an artist to watch.
