Mustard Service wrap obsession in sunshine on “Who Knew Your Body”

Miami has a way of making even the most unsettling ideas feel like a breezy Sunday afternoon. Mustard Service — the self-described “zest pop” trio of Marco Rivero Ochoa, Leo Cattani, and Adam Perez — have built their sound on exactly that tension: Cuban rhythms and bossa nova warmth wound around something far more restless underneath.

“Who Knew Your Body,” their new single and the first taste of a forthcoming album produced by Chad Copelin (Broncho, Wildorado), arrives out of that same contradiction. Smooth velvet vocals, melodic guitars, and upbeat sunshine production give the track an easy, feel-good surface — which makes its lyrical undercurrent land harder. The song is a critique of romantic obsession, of the way fixation gets dressed up as devotion. As frontman Marco explains:

“Wanting someone is beautiful, but needing someone to complete you as a fully grown adult is rom-com toxicity.”

The band — who have opened for Bombay Bicycle Club and headlined sold-out shows at Los Angeles’ prestigious El Rey Theatre — are building toward an album that goes darker still. Marco has spent the last year processing loss, mortality quietly sneaking into songs that still arrive gift-wrapped in the band’s irresistibly warm sound. “I had to deal with a lot of loss over the last year,” he shares, “and many songs process those emotions — things left unsaid, things that should have been.”
